Theoretical description

Addition and subtraction are operations of the same family. When complete any of these operations, the result shown by a standard calculator has as many decimal places as the term containing the most decimal places.

However, in practice, the number of decimal places indicates the precision of a measurement. It is meaningless to express the result in a higher order of precision than the least precise value. Hence, the result of operations containing addition and subtraction must contain as many decimal places as the least precise number, i.e. the result must contain as many decimal places as the number with least decimal places.

For example, if we consider the arithmetic expression 567.43 + 7.2 - 11.972, a normal calculator gives 562.658. However, in our calculator, the result appears only in one decimal place, as this is the least number of decimals our original numbers have. Therefore, the calculator shows 562.7, because 6 becomes 7 as the digit that comes after 6 in the original number is 5 (i.e. more than 4). Hence, the value of the last significant figure of output increases by 1 compared to its original value.
