Welcome to our Math lesson on Divisibility by 16, this is the sixteenth lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of Divisibility Rules, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.
Rule: "A number is divisible by 16 if the last three digits form a number that is divisible by 16 while the fourth last digit is even."
For example, 78,176 is divisible by 16 because the fourth digit from the right is even (8) and the last three digits (176) are divisible by 16 (176 ÷ 16 = 11).
On the other hand, 491,016 is not divisible by 16 as despite the last three digits (016) form a number divisible by 16, the fourth digit from the right (1) is odd.
Likewise, 1,342,518 is not divisible by 16 as the number formed by the last three digits (518) is not divisible by 16 (518 ÷ 16 = 32.375) despite the fourth number from the right (2) is even.
The calculator used to divide the above numbers by 16 gives 78,176 ÷ 16 = 4886; 491,016 ÷ 16 = 30,688.5; and 1,342,518 ÷ 16 = 83,907.375, which confirm the solution.
