Welcome to our Math lesson on The Meaning of Quadratics, this is the second lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of Factorising, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.

The Meaning of Quadratics

Quadratics are algebraic expressions of the form

ax2 + bx + c

where a, b and c are numbers (a and b are coefficients and c is a constant), while x is the only variable of such expressions.

For example,

5x2 - 4x + 2

is a quadratic expression where a = 5, b = -4 and c = 2.

We will discuss quadratics extensively in chapter 9. For now, we will limit ourselves simply to explaining how to factorise them in order to express a quadratic expression as a product of two brackets where possible (this is not always possible).
