The Meaning of Fractions. Equivalent Fractions. Simplifying Fractions Revision Notes

A fraction is a method used to express a part of a whole. In scientific terms fractions are rational numbers.

For a fraction to exist the whole must be divided in equal parts; otherwise, we cannot accept it. When a whole is not divided in equal parts, we apply tinier divisions until we obtain equal-sized divisions.

Each fraction is composed of three components:

  1. Numerator, which is the number written at the top part of a fraction. It represents the number of parts of a whole involved in the process.
  2. Denominator, which is the number written at the bottom part of a fraction. It represents the total number of parts the whole is divided.
  3. Fraction bar, which is a horizontal line that separates numerator from denominator.

In popular terminology, we refer to the fraction 1/4 as "one quarter", 1/2 as "one half", 3/4 as "three quarters" and 4/4 as "a whole".

Equivalent fractions are those fractions that, despite having different digits in the corresponding numerators and denominators, represent the same part of the whole.

For example, if we multiply the numerator and denominator of a given fraction by 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., we obtain as many equivalent fractions as we want. We can also apply division to obtain equivalent fractions, where both numerator and denominator are divided by common factors.

Simplifying fractions means writing them in the lowest terms possible. In other words, a fraction is fully simplified when it is not possible to further divide its numerator and denominator by the same number, i.e. when numerator and denominator are relatively prime.
