Applications of Operations with Fractions in Practice

There are numerous applications in practice of operations with fractions. Let's consider a couple of them.

Example 8

Jennifer had $600 in her wallet before entering a trade centre. She spent 2/5 of her money on buying clothes and then, she spent 3/4 of the remaining money on buying a mobile phone. How much did she spend for each purchase? How much money did she have left over at the end of shopping?

Solution 8

2/5 of 600 means 2/5 multiplied by 600. Thus, the amount of money Jennifer spent for buying clothes is:
Cost of clothes = 2/5 × 600
= (2 × 600)/5
= 1200/5
= $240
The remaining money at this point is
Remaining money = $600 - $240
= $360
Jennifer spent 3/4 of this amount on buying a mobile phone, i.e. she spent for this
Cost of mobile phone = 3/4 × 360
= (3 × 360)/4
= 1080/4
= $270
By the end of shopping, Jennifer still owns
Left over money = $600 - $240 - $270
= $90

Example 9

An employee completed a project in 3 days where in the first day she completed 5/14 of the project while in the second day she completed 4/7 of it. What part of the project did the employee completed in the third (and last) day?

Solution 9

First, let's calculate what part of the project the employee completed in the first two days. We have
Part of project completed in the first two days = 5/14 + 4/7
= 5/14 + (2 × 4)/(2 × 7)
= 5/14 + 8/14
= 13/14 of project
The entire project represents the whole, which for convenience we can write as 1 or better, as 14/14. Hence, in the third day the employee completed the remaining
1 - 13/14
= 14/14 - 13/14
= 1/14
of the project.
