Welcome to our Math lesson on Division of Fractions, this is the sixth lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of Operations with Fractions, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.
Division of Fractions
Division is the inverse operation of multiplication. Giving that
x ÷ y = x/y = x × 1/y
we obtain
a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c = (a × d)/(b × c)
Example 6
Calculate:
3/4 ÷ 2/5
2 ÷ 4/3
3/7 ÷ 4
2 1/3 ÷ 6 3/5
Solution 6
We have
3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2
= (3 × 5)/(4 × 2)
= 15/8
We have
2 ÷ 4/3 = 2/1 × 3/4
= (2 × 3)/(1 × 4)
= 6/4
= 3/2
= 1 1/2
We have
3/7 ÷ 4 = 3/7 ÷ 4/1
= 3/7 × 1/4
= (3 × 1)/(7×4)
= 3/28
It is better to have the mixed numbers written as fractions. We have
2 1/3 ÷ 6 3/5 = (2 × 3 + 1)/3 ÷ (6 × 5 + 3)/5
= 7/3 ÷ 33/5
= 7/3 × 5/33
= (7 × 5)/(3 × 33)
= 35/99
