Multiplication of Fractions
Multiplication of fraction is simple: we multiply numerators with each other and denominators with each other too. The result obtained is the product of multiplication. In symbols, we have
a/b × c/d = (a × c)/(b × d)
For example,
3/5 × 4/7 = (3 × 4)/(5 × 7)
= 12/35
When a number multiplies a fraction, the number obviously multiplies only the numerator of fraction because
a × b/c = a/1 × b/c = (a × b)/(1 × c) = (a × b)/c
Example 5
Calculate:
7/11 × 23/14
6 × 2/5
4/7 ÷ 2
Solution 5
We can simplify the first numerator and the second denominator by 7 to obtain a more suitable fraction after the operations. Thus,
7/11 × 23/14 = 1/11 × 23/2
= (1 × 23)/(11 × 2)
= 23/22
We can write 6 as
6/1. Thus,
6 × 2/5 = 6/1 × 2/5
= (6 × 2)/(1 × 5)
= 12/5
Again, we can write 2 as
2/1. We have
4/7 ÷ 2 = 4/7 ÷ 2/1
= 4/7 × 1/2
= (4 × 1)/(7 × 2)
= 4/14
We can simplify the result by 2 to obtain
4/14 = (4 ÷ 2)/(14 ÷ 2) = 2/7
