Welcome to our Math lesson on Power of Fractions, this is the seventh lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of Operations with Fractions, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.

Power of Fractions

From chapter 1 we know that power is a kind of recurrent multiplication by the same factor. For example, 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16. The same approach can be used in fractions as well. Thus, for example we can write
(3/5)2
= 3/5 × 3/5
= (3 × 3)/(5 × 5)
= 9/25
In general, we can writeRemark! When you are dealing with mixed numbers or integers, it is better to have them written as fractions, as it is a category that includes all these numbers. For example, if we have
5 × 2 1/3
we cannot write the result as 10 1/3 but convert both numbers as fractions and then make the operation. Thus, we have
5 × 2 1/3 = 5/1 × 7/3 = 35/3 = 11 2/3
As you see, we obtain a different result, so the first method (multiplying the whole parts separately) is wrong.
