How to Convert an Improper Fraction into Mixed Number
An improper fraction can be converted into mixed number by dividing the numerator by its denominator. The quotient of division represents the whole part of the mixed number; the remainder of the division represents the numerator of the mixed number while the denominator does not change, as it represents the way of division and does not have to do with the amount we take into consideration. Symbolically, we have
For example,
32/5 = 6 2/5
because 32 ÷ 5 = 6 (2).
Example 3
Write the following fractions as mixed numbers.
41/7
18/11
55/16
Solution 3
We have 41 ÷ 7 = 5 (6). Hence,
41/7 = 5 6/7
We have 18 ÷ 11 = 1 (7). Hence,
18/11 = 1 7/11
We have 55 ÷ 16 = 3 (7). Hence,
55/16 = 3 7/16
